A Trusted Guide to Notarization Services

As a California notary public, I’m here to make your life easier by ensuring the documents you need notarized are handled professionally and in compliance with the law. But just like any profession, there are rules about what I can and cannot do. Understanding these boundaries helps protect both you and me, ensuring the notarization process is smooth and legally sound.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what services I can offer, what’s beyond my authority, and how we can work together to meet your needs.

What I Can Notarize for You

I specialize in notarizing many common documents, making sure they’re executed correctly and with complete confidence. Here’s a snapshot of what I can help with:

  • Acknowledgments: If you’ve signed a document voluntarily and need confirmation of your identity, I can take care of that.

  • Jurats: Sworn statements that require you to swear or affirm the truth of the document’s contents? I’m authorized to administer those too.

  • Certified Copies of Powers of Attorney: I can certify copies of your power of attorney documents and certain entries from my notary journal.

  • Oaths and Affirmations: Need an oath administered for an affidavit or deposition? I’ve got you covered.

How This Helps You: These services ensure your documents are accepted by the parties requiring notarization, avoiding costly delays or rejections.

What I Cannot Notarize

While I aim to serve you in every way possible, some things are outside the scope of what California allows me to do.

  • Vital Records: Birth, death, or marriage certificates can’t be notarized. You’ll need to request certified copies directly from the county or state agency that issued them.

  • Blank or Incomplete Documents: I cannot notarize a document that isn’t fully filled out. Doing so would violate the law and jeopardize your document’s validity.

  • Documents Where I Have a Conflict of Interest: If I’m personally involved in a transaction or stand to benefit from it, I cannot act as your notary.

Why This Matters to You: These limitations are designed to protect you by ensuring impartiality and legal compliance in every notarization.

I’m Here to Notarize, Not to Advise

As your notary, my role is to verify identities, witness signatures, and ensure your documents are completed correctly. What I cannot do is offer legal advice or help you understand the terms of your documents—that’s the role of an attorney.

If you have questions about the meaning or implications of a document, I’ll happily refer you to a qualified attorney to get the answers you need.

Why This Matters to You: This clear boundary ensures that your documents are handled without any conflicts or misunderstandings.

Immigration Documents: What You Should Know

California imposes strict rules for notaries when it comes to immigration paperwork. Unless I’m registered as an immigration consultant, I cannot help prepare or advise on these documents. However, I can notarize immigration forms as long as they meet California’s requirements.

How I Protect You: I follow the law carefully to ensure there are no missteps in handling these sensitive documents, safeguarding your process.

In-Person Notarization Is the Law in California

While other states may allow remote online notarization (RON), California still requires all notarizations to be completed in person. This ensures the security and authenticity of the process.

How I Help You: I’m happy to meet with you at your convenience, ensuring we follow all legal requirements while accommodating your schedule.

Setting Expectations: Common Misunderstandings About Notaries

Sometimes there’s confusion about what a notary can and cannot do. Let me clear up a few misconceptions to help you prepare for your notarization.

  • "A notary can verify the truth of my statements.": My role is to verify your identity, not the content of your documents.

  • "I can use expired ID.": Unfortunately, California law requires current, government-issued photo identification to complete a notarization.

What This Means for You: Clear expectations mean less hassle for you and a faster, smoother process from start to finish.

Let’s Work Together to Get It Right

My job as your notary is to help you feel confident and secure that your documents are handled correctly and in accordance with California law. By understanding what I can and cannot do, we can work together to ensure your notarization needs are met professionally and efficiently.

Have questions or need to schedule a notarization? Feel free to reach out—I’m here to help! Your peace of mind is my top priority.
